3D Animation Process

3D content ideas

I am finding it hard to think of an idea for my 3D as i think it is hard to show tattoos through this media. A lot of people have given me ideas, such as using poser to create a person and then show tattoos on them, but I personally think that poser models look really tacky and horrible. Also I wouldn’t look realistic enough to show the tattoos on skin.

I have come up with two different ideas, and am following the one through. The only problem I really have with them is that I’m still not actually sure if I like them, and even want to produce them.
The first idea I has, was an Ident for all of my FMP work. This means it would be displayed before my game, and on my website, and most likely on all of my written work, and books.
The aim I was going for with the ident, was generally like the MTV idents. The main one I looked at, which gave me the idea of an ident was a YouTube MTV video ident which showed, 3D blocks of colour wrapping themselves around buildings. The first part of the clip was black solid blocks wrapping and draping around a huge, tall building and its interior, spelling out dark, horrible words as the blocks come together. In the second part, it fades into a black word, in which you can only see half of the word. The black then peels away, looking like tape, leaving the word in multi colours. The blocks then start their journey again, going over the black words, and turning them into nice, happy, bright words, in multicolours.
I liked this video because it showed a lot of imagination and was very creative. I loved the fact that they had used 3D with video and was bring words to life, using a very simple idea. It is a very lively video, with a lot going on, and I thought it would be really good to base my own ident, on these key things.
My ident idea was maybe to come up with a logo and then send lots of coloured blocks on a journey around a room, maybe area 51, and then for them to meet up in the middle and form the logo. I really liked this idea at the time, and thought it would be really fun to do, but after a couple of weeks, I thought that this idea was too plain and wouldn’t really be that good to do.

Still sticking with the ident idea, I then decided to research a lot more idents. Another series of idents that I found and liked, were the E4 idents. There was a few of these that caught my eye, and gave me a couple more ideas. The first one that caught my eye was one of a purple fluffy monster, which smiles, looks around, and then jumps towards loads of the same monster which then pans up to show E4.
I really liked this ident because it’s very plain, fun, and easy to do. I thought that the monster looked very cute and funny, but also very easy to remember and as well as the fact that as soon as you see it, you just know it Is E4, due to the colour that it is. I thought that this ident was really fun, and was thinking of doing one similar. I wanted to create my own little monster that represented tattoos in a way, which would then run towards loads of others, who would gather together and then all position themselves in the shape of the logo I wanted.
I’m not sure why I passed aside this idea, as looking at it now, I think it is a very good idea and would be really fun to play with. If I have time, I am considering making this 3D ident as well as the 3D content I have decided to construct.

The second ident I had a huge interest in was one of a matchstick dog. The video was pretty much just a matchstick dog that jumps around for a bit and gets out of breath and sits down. It then gets an itch and scratches with its back legs, which sets him alight. He then turns to dust and forms the e4 logo.
I thought that this was really good because it was though out really well. I found it very funny and looked amazing. I think that this is a very good ident, because it makes people laugh, which then make them talk about it to other people, which then makes it popular and known well.
I didn’t really get any ideas from it, but it did give me more inspiration to do the monster idea I had.

After playing around with these ideas in my head, I then decided to look at something different then idents. I started thinking back to the poser models that a friend had suggested, and was wondering what id do if I was to try and work around using a poser model. After a lot of thinking, I came up with an idea which was creating motion graphic lines to swirl around a body and then to go onto the body to form a tattoo. The only problem was working around poser.
I got the solution to this problem, when Mark Allen showed me his portfolio of University. In his portfolio, he had made a plain, grey human body model. This then helped me solve my problem, and also gave me another idea for my 3D content.
The next idea I got was to make two of these human models, one male and one female. These models would then spin around in a circle, whilst designs of tattoos I had created appeared and disappeared on them. After going through this idea in my head, I then thought of another feature that I could add. This was when the tattoos appear on the body, it would freeze and then vector lines would come off it, with words describing the tattoo and area written at the end of the line.
I then decided that this was the idea I was going to go for, and started on the process. After spending a couple of hours in making my 3D body, I then came up with another idea, which I thought would be much easier and quicker to produce.
This idea was of a little robot, who was going to be asleep when the camera is first on him, and then for him to wake up to see a wall right in front of him. He would then make his way towards the wall where an arm will extend out of a box on his body to spray the wall. The camera will then reveal the wall, which will have the name of my FMP on it.
