Web Design Process

Website Design

For my FMP website, I want to create a design that is simple and easy to navigate around. I want my website to be constructed using simple colours and to have a simple layout. The information that will be presented on my website is, my own biography, about the college course, a gallery featuring all the photos I have taken of other peoples tattoos, a video player showing all of the interviews I have done, and also a gallery on my own tattoo designs.
11 To help me come up with a couple of design ideas, I will research and compare lots of different existing websites.
The first website I looked at was a website that displayed a “Gallery of over 4,500 bloomin' good web designs”.
The first thing that attracts me to this website is the colour scheme. I like this as they are really simple colours, which have been used effectively. This is one of this websites aspects that I want to use on my own website.
Another feature that I like about this website is the orange banner across the top of the page. I think that this is good because it gives the page a sense of wideness. I also like the fact that all of then buttons/ tabs are all above the orange band. This gives the page simplicity. I also like the black plain background and the fact that they have used a lighter shade to box off the information that is included on the page. Altogether I find that this is a very simple, effective website.

Another website I looked at was another based on website design. The only thing that attracted me to this website was the green band at the top of the page. I like this because it seems to help split the page up and also attracts you eyes to the top of the page making the page seem longer. Again, I like the colour scheme on this website. I like the fact that it is plain, but using colour at the same time to make it stand out and eye catching. I think it is good that they have used this technique to make the title of the page stand out, and the fact that they have made it so the green strip and the black background/ page, spills together through grass and a tree. This is one feature I am considering using on my FMP website.

I looked at many other websites to help me make up my mind on what I wanted (these will be listed in my bibliography). I decided after doing a lot of research, that I didn’t particularly want to copy anyone’s website idea, and that I wanted to come up with my own individual one. This then triggered me off messing around with Photoshop to come up with a design I liked.

This was my original design that I came up with, that I liked, but thought was a bit out of place with the rest of my project. I also thought that it was a bit too plain, and there was nothing filling up the space in the white area. I then scrapped this idea relatively quickly, and worked on something smaller and easier to work with.

This was then the next design I came up with, but really didn’t like it that much, as I thought it was way to plain, as well as too small for a gallery to fit onto it. I then decided to again scrap this, but not before I messed around with the design again.

My final idea was to use a flash gallery player on the majority of all my pages, so I came up with this simple design. The flash galleries would be displayed between the white lines, with the page buttons underneath the chunky white line. I then kept with this idea and produced it in Dreamweaver. I also produced the website above in Dreamweaver too.
